About Us

The Northcote Rugby Union and Sports Club is a thriving club in its 78th year. Based on Auckland’s North Shore, Northcote Rugby Club held its inaugural meeting on the 3 April 1929, entered in the Auckland Rugby Union competition. The club, with its home ground at Stafford Park and clubrooms in Kauri Glen Road, Northcote, was the second club to be formed on the North Shore of Auckland and was registered as an incorporated club in 1955. The club is owned by its members who have limited liability by virtue of the incorporated status of the club.

The Harvey Wright fields (where the club is based today), were constructed and developed by Northcote Rugby Club volunteers, lead by Harvey Wright, and opened in 1976.

Northcote is a proud member of the North Harbour Rugby Union which was set up in 1985 when it separated from the Auckland Union. The union is comprised of 11 clubs that have by mutual agreement remained amateur. The clubs include Northcote, Takapuna, Glenfield, Marist, East Coast Bays, Massey, Kumeu, Mahurangi, Helensville, Silverdale and North Shore.

North Harbour is in turn one of ten first division provincial unions that play in the professional NPC (National Provincial Competition).

The club fields strong teams throughout the senior and junior grades every year with the quality of coaches at the club ensuring many enjoy competition success and a number of players going on to gain representative honours.

The club has some of the best club rugby facilities in New Zealand with two superb playing fields, extensive changing rooms, a grandstand and three bars which serve its many playing and non-playing members. Its bars - the "Main Lounge", and the "Snow White" bar are available for public functions.

The Cotehanga Bar can accommodate more than 100 plus people and is considered the players’ bar. The Hanga is open 4pm to midnight Wednesday to Sunday’s. It’s a sports bar atmosphere that includes a new big screen TV, loads of rugby memorabilia, a pool table and a table-tennis table. The Hanga is further enhanced with a heated outside seating area to accommodate the smoking laws and has its own big screen TV.
