27th April vs Massey (Red)

The old saying "a game of two halves" was exactly what the 21s played on Saturday out at Moire Park versus Massey.

Starting with a great deal of gusto and vigour, the Cote men got off to a flyer, with Harry Carter opening the scoring with a well-taken try after 1 minute. Four minutes later, Amir Soeker finished off next to the posts after backs and forwards had combined well to put him away. Jack Stead nailed the conversion and a 12-0 lead.

Massey teams don't lie down, and they struck back with a well-taken try from a lineout drive. The grind then began with both teams holding onto possession and then turning it over at crucial times. Cote looked dangerous in the counterattack from the back, with fullback Xavier Tenboom dangerous every time he countered. Reimana Saunderson-Rurawhe, the benefactor from one of these counterattacks, down the right-hand touch with a great finish. Jack Stead again kicked the conversion. Massey then scored a well-taken try, and the halftime score was 19-12.

After oranges, Cote scored a great try against Harry Carter once again from an outstanding counterattack that was sparked by Xavier and Reimana and was well finished by Hazza. Reimana slotted the conversion and the Cote were looking in control. Then Massey put the boot away and ran everything, and the Cote boys were under pressure, and this led to discipline issues around the ruck. A key area of learning for next week. An infringement saw a Cote player in the bin and Massey struck back with 3 well taken try's and they got the lead 27-26.

Like last week the Cote men then started to put phases together in the right parts of the field. After one missed penalty attempt, Massey tried to run it out of their half, and some better defense from Cote resulted in another penalty of 45m. Up stepped Jack Stead who calmly slotted the penalty for a 29-27 win for the team.
Riley Tofilau was the player of the day and capped off a great week after being named in the Wider Training group for North Harbour's upcoming NPC preseason games. Great stuff, Skip.

The team now look forward to next week where we will host ECB at home.
